Hello, Dolly! by Jerry Herman
venue: Mary Moody Northen Amphitheatre
date: 1984 – 1987
Director: James Stoker
This production of Hello, Dolly premiered in the summer of 1984 and ran for four seasons at the 1800 seat Mary Moody Northen Amphitheatre in Galveston, TX. It starred jazz singer Marilyn Maye and featured a cast of almost eighty performers. It ran in repertory with The Lone Star, an historical drama depicting Texas struggle for independence.
I designed almost 500 costumes for this production. The director and choreographer was from Las Vegas and, as such, the production design reflected that as well as Miss Maye’s jazz style. The design was very stylized creating a look more appropriate for a musical revue. Each production number had its own color scheme and there was little or no sense of period realism. The design supported the strong spectacle of the production which included extensive, lengthy production numbers and dancing waters in the background on some musical numbers.
